To create a walled courtyard inspired by Cornwall

The brief: To create a courtyard to use for entertaining and to improve the overall flow of the extensive gardens surrounding the area. Cornwall was an integral part of the clients life so a nod to the beautiful county was an interesting twist  we introduced to this formal space.

Implementation: When clearing and levelling the site we found a previously unknown well which was located almost centrally to the original plan so the original drawings went out of the window and we replanned the entire space to accommodate this amazing discovery!

Dark grey slate was used, mixed red bricks to match the original country house and a water feature was created using a  central slate standing stone with a mix of drought resistant planting and damp plants in the central bed.

The well and each architectural Amelanchia tree was  uplit. A pergola was introduced for shaded entertaining during the summer in this sun trap courtyard and paths lead to the adjacent rose garden. Lastly, the kitchen wall was replaced with glass bifold doors leading out into the courtyard opening up the kitchen as well as the garden.

Sedum

An empty border in a rear gardenThe brief: to design and plant a colourful border to be viewed from a window for an elderly house bound lady - a sketch, planting plan and implementation was needed. The idea: Bright hues of pinks and purples easily seen from the house, low level planting not obscuring the view of the garden behind and year round colour and interest.

The client: "Thank you, we love it".

Implementation: Planting and ongoing maintenance

A border within a fruit gardenThe brief: to do something inventive with planting - a sketch only. The idea: To create an ornamental edible border with year round colour. The border fits with the overall theme of this part of the garden, but provides an interesting dimension to the planting including the introduction of height and movement to the border.

The client: "Wow, wow, wow,  really fantastic. thank you".

Implementation: This client is creating the border herself from my design and my period coaching.
